Over the past decades, Thailand has been relying heavily on fossil fuels. To secure environmental sustainability and the long-term electricity demand, in 2008, the Thai government expected to reduce carbon reduction by 20% within 15 years and double the renewable energy generation by double in 2040.

Women-led community-based sustainable energy development is always influential in target achievement! Wandee Kunchorngyakong, the Queen of Thai Solar Energy, is one of the drivers. She believed in the country’s potential to solar-dependent, especially with the intense solar radiation and high sunshine availability. In 1993, with her strong belief, supports from families and friends, and financial support from Asikorn Bank, her wish is realized, and started SPCG Public Company Limited (SPCG). And now, SPCG owned 36 solar plant farms in 10 provinces, generating 260 MW of electricity and powering over 24,000 households.

This brilliant example by Kunchorngyakong not only proves women to conquer their professional barriers and also proves how women can contribute to the national energy transition target. 60% of the employees in SPCG are female of which 10% are on the director board, making important decisions in the solar farm investment projects of other countries. Her significant yet inspirational commitment leads Thailand to achieve the carbon reduction and renewable energy generation target with increasing female contribution recognition. Her effort is recognized by the United Nation and is awarded the ‘Momentum for Change - Women for Results’, inspiring every Thai woman to participate in renewable energy projects and make successive energy decisions.
